Who needs the Face On Mars? It's only visible at low resolution. This one's right here, and quite clear no matter how close you zoom:

Site for a SWIL vacation? We could work on making an earring for it...

Right, well Picnic at Hanging Rock offers lots of evidence of faces on this planet's terrain.

I wonder why they have good resolution in the middle of nowhere, Alberta.

Playing around with google maps, I once wondered the same thing about North Korea (especially as compared with South Korea).

Presumably the US military wanted to take a good look at North Korea.
Similarly, some areas of Afghanistan have rather good resolution.

But Alberta? What's there?

Sure, but I would have thought the high resolution pictures would be classified.

There are some countries where most of the country has high enough resolution that you can see individual people. What I think is funny is that Alberta seems to go to higher resolution than Saskatchewan, and it's just that narrow strip of Alberta.

It's possible the quality isn't a reflection of any particular reason to resolve Alberta, but happenstance. For instance, Google may have gotten its hands on a set of very high-res images that some satellite-imaging company offers as a free sample -- of a section of Canada that nobody's likely to have any actual interest in.

Sometimes they're using flyover data from some individual who decided to do aircraft photography and share it.

Oh yeah, some parts of Australia, for example. I can't remember what town I was looking at yesterday, but I could see people getting out of their cars, hanging out on beaches, standing in their front yards, etc. I could even tell somewhat tell what they were (or weren't!) wearing1

Now I wish I'd known of that when I lived in Montana.

... Could someone have tweaked google's images? The terrain shading looks OK, but it's not as highlighted as might be...
