Twice in two days I've spent time with visiting SWAPAn Chris Cobb, but he's back at his Shaxpeare conference for the rest of his visit, leaving me with nothing but a perfect, beautiful day. So in tribute to his fondness for hiking, I decided to pay my respects to the farthest-upstream part of the Crum I could walk to, and set off on my longest hike I've done in years.

I started at the time-honored Path To The Meadow, observed in passing that Crumhenge really looks decrepit (I'm convinced the stones have sunk a lot lower into the soft ground), left College property and crossed Plush Mill Rd and Baltimore Pike, spent some time on the pathless side of the creek at Smedley Park, including climbing up an under-476 embankment made of mega-gravel, was perhaps the inaugural user of a 'play structure' apparently just installed in the next valley upcreek (it still had its manufacturer's tag dangling from it like a pricetag), climbed around a beautiful steep overlook in a vain attempt to get further upstream, and ended up startling a deer in a stand of pine trees, watched from above as three men in a tub (okay, three apparently-college-students in a canoe) paddled along the Crum, having to stop every twenty feet to lift their vessel off the rocks (which for some reason made me dogger, "Rote-a-boat-boat, three more men afloat; a doctor, a lawyer, and Twain who wrote Sawyer"), lay in the grass and read a chapter or so of Inversions, and made it home to Greylock in less than three hours. Can you combat too-little-fresh-air syndrome with megadoses? Regardless, welcome Spring!

And as a culminating surprise, as I was walking back along Baltimore Pike, in front of the newly-opened storage facility just past the Mall, a car slowly went past, yelling "Watermelon! Fresh Peas! Corn! Fireworks! Jimmosk!" and as I recognized Kyra and Ethan, pulled off to the side of the road so we could talk for a minute. Hopefully a harbinger of more visiting Fun yet to come!

Alas, as I warned you, not in the near future (this trip was just to visit with my parents and to do something that I mentioned in my most recent locked post but will not talk about publicly ;-)). However, I totally intend to be in town for two weekends in a row before the spring is done!

Speaking of Chris Cobb's visit, it was one of the more bizarre moments of the weekend when I was explaining to my brother about some of the advice that Chris Cobb had given me and he slowly turned to me and said, "Chris Cobb '90" and then proceeded to describe him in great detail. I had had no idea that he'd been visiting!
